April 20 - 21, 2017 - Essential Stitches and Nuances of Ribbon Embroidery

Two Days, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm each day

Class Description: Explore the essential stitches and nuances of Ribbon Embroidery through an imagined garden topiary design. What is important to learn with ribbon embroidery is not a vast amount of stitches, but how to work the stitches so they are effective and purposeful in a design. Besides teaching the basics of design transfer and tools, the topiary design itself showcases essential ribbon embroidery stitches, such as the ribbon stitch, lazy daisy variations, looped and ruched stitches, french knots.  All skill levels welcome.

Intro to Cartonnage, at San Francisco School of Needlework and Design

One Day, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm

Class Description: Cartonnage is a centuries-old French Boxmaking process of creating fabric-covered boxes from the inside out, using cardboard as the base goods. Fabric is laminated (a fancy word for gluing layers together) to precisely cut cardboard pieces, shaped as needed, embellished and finished artfully.  Using pre-cut cardboard provided in the class kit, a small round, oval or heart-shaped box will be covered and formed, with luscious hand-dyed silk velvets and matelasse. We will discuss cardboard types and cutting tools/methods, then become proficient with laminating, shaping and finishing. Several colorways will be offered.  All skill levels welcome.

Gibb & Hiney Colorado Retreat

Join us in Colorado for our annual ribbonwork retreat. This time we are having two sessions, and you will sign up for one or the other - Session 1, or Session 2. Both sessions are identical in teaching and project.

You will make a beautiful project team taught by Helen and Mary Jo. Each session is a wonderful opportunity for 8 lucky students to learn the secrets of working with rich silk fabrics (chiffon, dupioni, velvet, matelasse) and beautiful ribbons combined to make an exquisite project as only Helen and Mary Jo can design! And yes, you can do this! All skill levels welcome.
